Why Acoustics Matter

Today’s hybrid work environments are increasingly open and collaborative spaces where employees are encouraged to share ideas and speak up. Humans engaging with other humans is a good thing; however, the office can now be much noisier than the previous model of segmented and quiet cubicles. Business owners and designers should consider the acoustics when creating the right environment for optimal work.

Excessive noise levels at the workplace can lead to a variety of problems, including decreased productivity, increased stress levels, and even hearing damage over time. Fortunately, there are several solutions that can help reduce noise levels and create a more pleasant environment.

Absorbing Material - Decorative and Functional

One of the most effective acoustical solutions for large, open offices is the use of sound-absorbing materials. These materials are designed to absorb sound waves and reduce the amount of noise that bounces off hard surfaces like walls and floors. This can be achieved through the use of simple or intricately-designed acoustic panels, which can be installed on walls and ceilings to absorb sound waves and reduce echoes.

Acoustical ceilings are a good start but absorptive materials on the walls are critical to high performance,” says Steve Johnson in his March 22, 2023 Work Design Magazine article, Workplace Acoustics: A Tool to Draw Employees Back to the Office.

Sound Masking

Another effective acoustical solution is the use of sound masking systems. These systems work by producing a low-level background noise that helps to mask or cover up other sounds in the environment. This can help to create a more comfortable and less distracting office, especially in open plan settings or high-traffic areas.

And the opposite of too much noise is an empty office. “Spaces that are less than full may feel eerily quiet without the normal hustle and bustle of daily activity. Sound masking, in this case, will make a space feel more comfortable because the act of adding noise to the space will remove that ‘eerie’ feeling of reduced occupancy.” - Lencore website ‘How Does Sound Masking Work?’

I can attest, our Lencore Sound Masking system in our open space office has a peaceful hum. One doesn’t know how much it’s needed (or appreciated) until someone flips the switch to ‘off’ and our ears can hear everything. When designing and space planning for the senses, one should never overlook the importance of sound. It can be the difference between a productive environment or one full of distractions.
